Degrading health of people living in the country side

I am catching up with posting online my articles.

During my holiday I went to visit my family living in the country side. And so yesterday I went to the local fest where I observed people living their own seemingly normal and peaceful life although the whole world is in difficult situation ( pollution, poverty, wars, starvation etc. ).

Today I had a chance to meet couple of people whom I knew since about 20 years ago. When I say knew I mean that I saw them and sometimes I spoke with them a little bit. But apart from this I did not have contact with them and today I saw them for the first time after many years. Anyway what I saw was very sad. They are obese and some of them look very sick. Then I found out form my mother that they are or they were sick and one of them had chemotherapy.

And so my question here is:
How come these people live in the country side where apparently they have clean air and clean food but then they are so sick ?

My mother explained me that these people do not eat clean and healthy food anymore. They rarely have their own cows and poultry and they buy processed milk and other foods from the shops. Then they also eat a lot of sugar and drink the sweet drinks ( Coca-coal, Pepsi, Red Bull etc. ). On top of it these people take a lot more medicine that they used to do before - which is the result of the intense marketing campaign of the pharmaceutical companies in the recent years - and now they pay the consequences of the side effects. I can see that their life style ( economic ) is much higher than it used to be in the past but unfortunately their health is degrading drastically. And this is gonna get worse as these people do not get proper education in this matter and chose the easy and comfortable lifestyle of buying food in the supermarkets instead of growing their own food.
